About
Doi Inthanon is the big day trip from Chiang Mai: the park around Thailand's highest mountain, south-west of the city in Chom Thong district. It was one of the country's original national parks, set up in 1954, and it climbs from about 800 m to the 2,565 m summit, so the air gets properly cold near the top. Along the road up you'll pass waterfalls such as Wachirathan, the twin royal chedis built for the King and Queen's 60th birthdays, and the Royal Project station with its rhododendron garden. Around 500 bird species are recorded here. Leave early and bring a warm layer.
