Mae Hia is a proper local fresh market on the canal road south-west of the city, about 8 km from the centre. It sells produce, meat, fish and household goods, plus a lot of northern Thai food to take away: sai oua sausage, grilled pork, nam prik num and khaep mu pork crackling. The sai oua here is well regarded. Come in the morning when it's busiest and freshest, and bring cash.
