Thung Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae U Kho

Samoeng & Mae Chaem · West (Samoeng / Mae Chaem)

About

Thung Bua Tong at Doi Mae U Kho is a whole hillside of Mexican sunflowers in Khun Yuam, over the border in Mae Hong Son province, at around 1,600 m. For a few weeks a year the slopes turn solid yellow, and it's one of the north's big seasonal sights. It's a long drive from Chiang Mai, and the last stretch of mountain road is winding, so treat it as part of a Mae Hong Son loop rather than a day trip. Outside the bloom there's not much reason to go. Entry is free, and checking recent photos before you set off is well worth it.
