Takkatan Cave

Doi Suthep · Doi Suthep / Samoeng Rd

About

Takkatan Cave sits in the hills above Hang Dong, in the area being set aside as Op Khan National Park, and it's a proper adventure rather than a lit-up tourist cave. The name means grasshopper, from a story of grasshoppers sheltering here. The trail is rated hard and the way through the forest has almost no signs, and inside it's dark and unguided. Take a strong torch each and go with others. It closes in the rainy season, so plan for November to May, and set off early so you're not coming back in the dark.
